Day seventeen: the answer — "recorded in the patient file"

On day sixteen I wrote that the facility would check whether the restrictions on contact with my mother are formally recorded and open to review.

Today the answer arrived. The social worker quotes the treating physician:

“You can tell the son that these arrangements have indeed been recorded in the patient file following a consultation between the medical practitioners and the team coordinator, and that we will evaluate the arrangements regularly.”

That is the complete answer.

The arrangements in question were previously communicated to me in writing: daily telephone contact of at most 15 minutes via the ward phone, one visit per week of at most one hour, and the request not to discuss a possible return home — or any subject touching on discharge — during contact moments.

So what is now established: these restrictions are noted in the patient file, following an internal consultation between practitioners and the team coordinator.

Questions that remain open:

• Was a formal decision issued to my mother herself, or to a representative?
• On what legal basis do the restrictions rest?
• Through what route can my mother — or someone on her behalf — have these restrictions reviewed?
